Credit controllers work on behalf of companies to collect money they are owed from businesses and individuals. It involves contracting companies when payment is overdue usually by telephone. It is usually a function of an accounts department and specifically Sales Ledger.
The skills required for a Credit Controller include, firstly, communication skills including the ability to negotiate and influence others. Much of the work is done by telephone contact so relationship building is an important aspect. Secondly, a good credit controller will have a sound grasp of numeracy. Finally, Hunters believes that the best credit controllers are defined by a tenacity whereby the credit controller takes the view that the company’s money is regarded in the same manner as their own.
There is usually a minimum requirement of 5 plus GCSE’s at grades higher than C/4. There is an expectation that applicants for Credit Control will have the ability to use spreadsheets, typically Excel. Prior experience in credit control or accounts would be a distinct advantage. You will ideally have worked in an office or call centre.
Typical Sussex salary range: £18,000 – £25,000
