5 ways to job hunt in a new industry

By September 2, 2013No Comments

1-      Be flexible

You are already up against it trying to enter a new industry when you don’t have the experience, so avoid putting up any unhelpful barriers.  For example, be available to work any hours your potential employer could require.  Be flexible with regard to your salary expectations.  When you enter a new industry you essentially have to start at the bottom and work your way up.  Have faith that your talent will see you make rapid progress.  It also helps if you have your own transport.

2-      Tweak your cv

Re-write your cv in the style that would be effective for the new industry you are trying to enter.  It is best to avoid applying for jobs for which you are over-qualified; remember who is reading your CV.

3-      Labouring

If you’d like a job in labouring apply for a CSCS card; you can’t work on site without one.

4-      Office

If you are interested in office work then prove your MS Office skills by undertaking the Hunters MS Office tests.  If you need further training, Hunters will provide this free of charge.  You will find it helpful if you have acceptable grades in GCSE Maths and English.  It may also be worth considering some relevant voluntary work to underline your enthusiasm and prove your aptitude.

5-      Catering

Look to obtain a Food Hygiene Certificate.  In fact, in a general sense relevant industry-specific qualifications are always going to be helpful.  It isn’t just a case of applying for a job any more.  It is important to be aware of the entry requirements and then go full speed ahead to meet any standards the employer requires.  This will demonstrate your genuine determination to get the job.
