How to succeed at interview

By January 28, 2013No Comments

1-     Dress to impress.  There is no excuse for not ironing that shirt or polishing those shoes.  I could give you several examples of candidates who failed to get the job because their dress sense went awry.  Always wear a jacket.  Aim to be “well-groomed” and look to be conservative in image.  Don’t stand out for all the wrong reasons.

2-     Do your research.  Quite simply, if you don’t prepare then prepare to fail.  Who founded the company?  When?  What are do the financials look like for the last few years?  All this information can be found on the wonder that is the internet.

3-     Why am I perfectly suited for this role?  Make notes beforehand: what are my USPs (unique selling points)?  Have at a few points prepared.  Write them down on post its, with examples.  Examples can be incredibly powerful.  If one of your USPs is “I’m an amazing team-player” then have a practical example to back this up, ideally work-related but it could also relate to an interest (eg, “I’m a team-player who plays rugby every weekend, and do my bit for the team by laundering the team kit.”) Read them over before the interview, and be sure to release them into the flow of the interview.  If you don’t get the opportunity to mention them in the interview be sure to emphasise them at the close of the interview.
