How to get my dream job II

In my previous blog ‘How to get my dream job I’ we discussed the importance of location and flexibility in the application process.

I am more and more convinced that job applications represent an art form, and those who follow the rules can be very successful indeed.

A few short reflections for today…

Firstly, READ the job specification carefully.  The advert will broadcast exactly what the company is looking for.  The trick is to 1) ensure that you tick the ‘essential’ boxes – if you do then how exciting, if you don’t then you are in danger of wasting your own time and that of the recruiter.  2) Demonstrate that you tick the boxes by mirroring the key words used in the job spec in both your cv and covering letter.  On this point, always include a covering letter – but no longer than one or two succinct paragraphs.

Secondly, be honest with yourself.  There is no point applying for a permanent job when you know you are going travelling in a year.  In this instance you should be applying for contract/temporary positions only.  A job is a privilege not a right.

Finally, your career is everything.  If you don’t yet have the experience to apply for your next dream job, then do everything to get that experience even if you have to offer your services for free.
